Local and delicious with a view is the perfect combination and way to description Samuels Hotel and Dining Room. Located in Saltford, the establishment is on the other side of the Maitland River up on the hill overlooking the River and Goderich. Samuel’s Hotel has an intimate dining room for guest and non-guest to make reservations for Lunch or Dinner. The wine, beer and spirits menu offers a variety of local beverages from Cowbell beer to local strawberries in the daiquiri and Malivoire wine by the glass as their house wine. I choose a bottle of 2016 Dark Horse One Horse Town – Ontario Chardonnay from the Grand Bend Winery to share with my mom. The best part is, if you don’t finish the bottle, the staff can re-cork the bottle and you can take it home.
Kim Burgsma is the owner and operator of the rural and modern boutique with an exceptional Hotel and Dining experience. Samuels is the only restaurant in town that serves fresh house made hummus with bread prior to your meal; so if your one of those people who expect bread and butter on the table... this is even better!
The menu is seasonal and changes to always be current with what the local markets and vendors have harvested. My mom and I have very similar taste when ordering food, but we managed to not pick the same things and had a great variety in our meals. As a starter I got the house soup – tomato, roasted red pepper and basil, in a half bowl serving which was the perfect size started for my main meal. My mom ordered the Goats Cheese Salad in a side serving – crumbled goat’s cheese, mixed greens, grapes, strawberry’s, walnuts, scallion, with a sherry vinaigrette. All of the greens and veggies come locally from either Firmly Rooted or the Maitland Market. Mushrooms are all from Weth Mushrooms which you can order just a side of for $5.
Next we enjoyed our main meals. The Seafood Fettuccine with shrimp, lobster, carrot, sweet pepper, in a lemon and herb cream sauce. You could really taste the grilled lemon and parmesan cheese, which made the meal fresh and perfect for summer. I had the Goat’s Cheese Gnocchi with black olives, scallion, snow pea, roasted red pepper basil chipotle cream. As you may have noticed I had a vegetarian meal, and there are several options for gluten free. Even without the meat, the gnocchi is very filling and I took some home with me.
For the carnivores out there, you may be wondering what they have for you. Some of the mains include: Pistachio Turkey Schnitzel – Turkey comes locally from Hayter’s Turkey Products. Maple Dijon Salmon – Salmon comes local from Out of the Blue. Cassis Duck, smoked Pork and Pear, and Braised Beef Short Ribs are other options locally from Metzger’s Meats and Shanahan’s Meats.
Considering I couldn’t finish my meal and bottle of wine, I opted out of dessert, but there are so many seasonal treats to choose from which use other local suppliers such as Arva Flour, Boucher Honey, and Robinsons Maple Syrup. And for the overnight guest’s Samuels offers cupcakes by the front door. How extra special!
Their Taste of Huron Taste your own Adventure Tour includes dessert! A few of my friends visited not long ago and really enjoyed the desserts!
